camera review – Horizon Kompakt

The Horizon Kompakt is one of my favourite camera choices. I absolutely love the results I get from it and it constantly surprises me. One of my favourite techniques with this camera is to double expose as it’s so simple to do and you get great results. So here’s a review of the benefits of the Horizon Kompakt.

When I first got hold of my second hand limited edition cream Horizon Kompakt I was a bit nervous, not knowing how to load it and generally how it worked. It’s a bit of a beast and has very little settings, but it’s actually quite simple once you get the hang of threading the film through the rollers and you get some fantastic results. As most of you probably already know, it is a swing-lens camera for 35mm films that captures 120 degrees view of the subjects in front of you.

The one thing that I love the most about the Horizon Kompakt camera is that you can multiple expose, unlike its big brother, the Horizon Perfekt. Fair enough, you don’t get the fancy metering system, but I think it just makes it more of a challenge and you can get some fantastic unpredictable results. To multiple expose, all you do it cock the shutter, take a photo, cock the shutter, and take another photo it’s that simple as it’s a manual wind on.

From my experience you have to get the right weather and film combo and it can be a bit give or take. But when shooting multipleexposures it’s in it’s element because it loves the light, so if it’s underexposed and you multiple expose then you don’t have to worry!

But…if you want to create fantastic, straightforward shots then this camera is still one hell of a beauty!

Just a quick tip though…. keep your fingers at the back and hold the top and bottom or your fingers will get in the frame…this camera is wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide!
